Dragons are an integral part of the Dragon's Dogma title, and as the entire game is focused on dragons, we are here with this guide to help you on your journey to hunt down these giants easily and effectively.
There's only one true dragon in Dragon's Dogma 2, the final boss of the game; all other dragon-like creatures are lesser beings called drakes. Although they are weaker iterations of dragons, they still stand out as the most formidable adversaries in the game, alongside Medusa, Ogres, Cyclops, and Gryphons. Unlike other foes, Drakes pose an exceptional challenge, requiring you to level up to a certain degree before you can even dare to engage them with your party.
It's advisable to wait until you're midway through the game and sufficiently levelled to confront them. When you're prepared to face these formidable creatures and claim their skulls to adorn your walls, you need to locate them first.
This guide is here to provide comprehensive information on locating every Drake in the game and our pro tips and guidance to ensure you're properly prepared for each encounter.
How do you usually find Drakes in Dragon's Dogma 2?
Whether you're uncertain about which drakes you've yet to encounter or prefer a more organic approach to finding them, you can simply go to Luz. By visiting Luz, situated in the northeastern region of Battahl, you can obtain hints regarding the possible locations of drakes. As the spirit of a former Arisen, Luz offers clues upon payment of a small gold fee.
It's important to note that Luz won't directly pin point the exact whereabouts of drakes, so don't anticipate receiving direct map markers during your conversations with her. However, her hints are accurate, especially if you've extensively explored the map and can interpret them accurately.
Locations of All the Drakes in Dragon's Dogma 2
Most dragons in Dragon's Dogma 2 can be found in two prime locations:
- Vernworth: Vernworth encompasses a vast expanse, stretching from the northernmost reaches of the map down to its central and southern areas. Travelling from one end to the other is a significant journey, and the difficulty of the monsters, including drakes, varies greatly depending on which part of the Vernworth territory you're in. However, most early game drakes are in this region.
- Battahl: Several of the drakes encountered in Battahl aren't merely random dragons; they are linked to significant quests you'll undertake towards the endgame. Given that this area is considerably more challenging than Vernworth and the drakes here are particularly formidable, it's advisable to steer clear of them until you've reached at least level 40.
Since your level is important when facing dragons, we have made this list, starting from low level requirements to high level requirements.
The Tower of Melve (Level 15+)
This drake can be encountered when you start the Readvent Of Calamity Quest in Melve, although its occurrence can vary based on prior quests completed. Repeated visits to Melve increase the likelihood of encountering a drake attacking the town during one of your excursions.

Following the drake's defeat, you'll also gain the chance to unlock one of the game's premier Vocations, the Mystic Spearhand.
Northwest of Nameless Village (Level 25+)
This drake can be located near the rivers depicted in the map image above. Situated in the relatively easier section of the Vernworth region, this drake presents a formidable challenge as it tends to flee during combat.
Capcom Northwest Nameless Village
To stand a chance against it, ensure your level is at least 25 to avoid being swiftly defeated. Employ a relentless assault on its vulnerable spot to attempt to stun the drake and prevent its escape.
Northwest of the town of Harve (Level 30+)
This specific drake can be encountered in multiple locations within this vicinity. If you don't immediately spot them upon arrival, conduct a brief circular exploration of the area, and you're likely to encounter them.
Capcom NorthWest Harve
Unlike some other drakes, this one typically doesn't attempt to flee. However, it poses a greater threat than the previous one, so ensure you're sufficiently equipped for the encounter.
West of Ancient Battleground (Level 40+)
This drake presents perhaps the greatest challenge within Vernworth, situated in the region's highest-level area. It retaliates with formidable lightning and explosion attacks to decimate both you and your party.
Capcom West of Ancient BattleGround
While there are nearby ballistae that can inflict significant damage, it's unwise to depend solely on them, as the drake will likely destroy them with its initial lightning strike.
Southeast Battahl Forest (Level 40+)
This drake is likely the most manageable encounter in all of Battahl. You'll come across it lounging beside a stream, with numerous poisonous gecko-like creatures nearby.
Capcom Southeast Battahl Forest
Being overwhelmed by both adversaries simultaneously is something you'll want to avoid. Following this, anticipate the drake utilising fire, explosives, and lightning attacks.
Pro Tip: Prioritise eliminating the smaller foes first while maintaining a safe distance from the drake.
Dragonsbreath Tower (Level 40+)
This specific drake is actually classified as a lesser dragon. Getting there proves quite challenging, as you'll need to ascend a literal mountain, contending with brigands, goblins, and harpies along the way.
Capcom Dragon's Breath
Harpies, in particular, pose a significant threat, as they frequently snatch you or your party members and hurl you off the cliffside to your demise. Exercise caution as you confront them and ascend.
At the mountain's peak, beyond the Riftstone of the Patterned and a Campsite, you'll encounter the lesser dragon.
Volcanic Island (Level 50+)
Taking on this drake presents the ultimate test of skill and bravery. With a formidable array of abilities at its disposal, including devastating meteor attacks, this adversary demands the utmost preparation and caution.
Capcom Volcanic Island
Venturing into this area prematurely could prove fatal, as the surrounding threats, such as fire salamanders and harpies, only compound the danger. You should wait until reaching a level of around 50 before attempting to confront this formidable foe, ensuring a fighting chance against the most challenging drake encountered thus far.
The Endgame Drakes
Upon vanquishing the formidable dragon that catalysed your journey as the Arisen, you'll reach a pivotal juncture. Here, you'll have the choice to conclude the story as it stands or embark on the path leading to the endgame, where the pursuit of the True Ending awaits. In this apocalyptic climax, the world plunges into chaos, with its final moments drawing near.
Capcom Endgame Drake
When you survey your map, you'll discern crimson beacons strewn across the landscape. These beacons serve not only as pivotal elements in the story's culmination and the quest for the True Ending but also as indicators of formidable Unmoored Dragons awaiting confrontation.
Unlike the drakes encountered earlier in the game, these dragons are conveniently marked on your map, facilitating their pursuit as you endeavour to claim the coveted rewards.
