Recently afterpay have launched a new ad (linked below) which is essentially informing people that afterpay can be used almost anywhere. I’ve seen it on tv, I’ve heard it when listening to podcasts and I’ve seen it on YouTube. It’s creative for sure, BUT I’m not a fan about how it is seeming to normalise using or taking out debt to pay for things. I will never ever shame or judge anyone for being in debt, however, as someone who is really passionate about proactive financial action and education this add doesn’t sit right with me. Afterpay can be an effective budgeting tool if it’s used and managed correctly. However , the reality is that afterpay (and other forms of BNPL) can very easily spiral out of control and suddenly your BNPL is controlling you, instead of you being in control of it. Research shows that as BNPL is so accessible, it is commonly the first debt that young people take on. What concerns me with these types of ads, is that people will (and do) start to use it for day to day expenses, instead of using it in an emergency financial situation and see it as a normal way of paying for things, resulting in large and unmanageable levels of debt. So make sure to check what their policy is if you don't want to be the grinch this Christmas.
